Conditions We Treat At The Practice

Previously there has been a perception that physiotherapists don’t treat disorders of the spine causing neck and back pain.  However, due to his post-graduate training with the Australian Institute of Orthopedic Manual Therapy (A.I.O.M.T.- see “Why Choose Us” for details), Phil has developed a local reputation for his new and innovative treatment techniques for back and neck pain, as well as migraine and headache.  He also treats a wide range of other musculoskeletal disorders.

The complete list of conditions treated at the practice include:

  • Foot & Ankle- Aching feet, sprained ankles / ligament sprains, orthotic prescription, fallen arches, shin splints (Compartment Syndrome), Achilles & other tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, arthritis pain, muscle tears / calf tears.
  • Knee & Leg- Arthritis and patella (kneecap) pain, lower limb malalignment, cartilage, ligament and muscle tears, knee replacement.
  • Hip & Back- Hip pain / replacement and bursitis, low back and mid back pain, scoliosis, swayback etc.
  • Neck- Neck pain, headache & migraine, dizziness, nausea, “drop attacks”, stress headaches.
  • Shoulder- Rotator cuff tears / pain, frozen shoulder, impingement syndrome.
  • Elbow & Wrist- Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, overuse syndrome / tendonitis.
  • Pulmonary Conditions- Pneumonia, Chest Infections.
When Should I Book In For Physiotherapy

At Fit For Life Physiotherapy & Pilates we treat all age groups ranging from young children to seniors.

Putting it simply, if you experience any ache or pain that is present for more than a day this is a warning sign to alert you that you have muscular tension and/or your body has become out of alignment, and the normal muscular and joint function has become altered.  Quite often you may experience pain without any obvious cause, due to a slow and subtle change in your bodily function.  This can occur over several months or even years.  There are numerous causes for this including:

  • A past injury such as an ankle sprain which alters the walking (gait) pattern which then causes foot, knee, hip or low back pain.
  • Being left or right handed can create dominance throughout the muscular system on one side of the body leading to malalignment.
  • Simple habits such as favouring one leg or arm with activities of daily living such as work, gardening, climbing stairs, bending

Physiotherapy is helpful when you:

  • Suffer from pain or stiffness affecting any of the joints within the body.
  • Have arthritis causing joint stiffness and pain affecting any of the joints of the body.
  • Have sustained a ligament tear (sprain), muscle tear (strain), tendonitis or contusion (“cork”).
  • Suffer from neck pain which causes headache or migraine.
  • Play sport or exercise and suffer from pain during or after these activities.
  • Have pronating feet (dropped arches) causing Bunions or Corns or lower limb pain (orthotics prescribed).
  • Have a leg length difference or walk with a limp.
  • Have knock-knees or bowed legs.
  • Walk with “toe-out” or “pigeon toes”.
  • Have the soles of your shoes wearing unevenly.
  • Have suffered a stroke, neurological or musculoskeletal disorder.
  • Have undergone orthopaedic (musculoskeletal) surgery.
  • Want to get fit but have injuries preventing this transition.
Benefits Of Pilates

Attracting people of all ages and fitness levels, the Pilates regime has become extremely popular worldwide.  This form of non-impact exercise was designed by Joseph Pilates, who believed in training the mind and body to work together towards the goal of overall fitness. Today, Pilates has become a major tool used by physiotherapists to treat shoulder, spine, hip, knee and ankle injuries as well as whiplash and post surgical patients.

Phil Newton is certified in Pilates and passes on its benefits to all appropriate clientele.  Pilates is being utilised as an adjunct to standard rehabilitation at Fit For Life because this method of exercise utilises the traditional rehabilitation principles of stability first and then mobility, and also emphasises postural alignment, body awareness and functional fitness.  This leads to improved body alignment and biomechanical function, resulting in a significantly reduced risk of injury and promotes a more speedy injury resolution.

Pilates is a new way for therapists to help patients eliminate pain, regain function and strength in a safe and efficient manner.  You can enjoy Pilates at home when the basic movements are mastered during injury recovery, and progress to group classes with our local affiliate My Yoga and Pilates Space.
